Shopping for Health

Like many teenagers, check out my sons, the cereal box at breakfast panel. A few weeks ago, she noticed the health-related information on our Whole Grain Total cereal box and asked me what they mean. You may be wondering the same thing.

Health claims on food packages to help people to shop for foods that are associated with the prevention of disease. “A number is permitted health claims in relation to the health benefits of whole grains to help consumers wise food choices,” says Kathleen Zelman, MPH, RD, director of nutrition for WebMD Health.

• cereals, fruits and vegetables can lower cancer risk if they are contained in a low-fat diet. A diet that is higher in fat high risk for certain cancers.

• Nutrition, which in saturated fat and cholesterol and rich in fruits, vegetables, grains and products that may contain some types of dietary fiber, particularly soluble fiber, reduce the risk of heart disease low. Oats are a good source of soluble fiber cereals.

Ms Zelman pointed out that during a health claim on foods with calcium and bone health is not mentioned, whole grains, “a Frühsst whole grain cereal with skim milk and fresh fruit is an ideal start to the day since fortified cereal and milk provide calcium, protein and met with a whole range of vitamins, minerals and fiber to your diet and keep you feeling full all morning. ”

The 2005 dietary guidelines and MyPyramid food guidance system to stress the importance of eating whole grain foods. They recommend including at least three servings daily of whole grains in place of processed foods, cereals. Health claims that can help you find important food grain.
