Also referred to as manic depression bipolar disorder is a mental illness characterized by disruptions in mood, from a feeling of crushing depression switching to a high of mania. In some cases, the afflicted person shows the symptom of both depression and mania at the same time.
Bipolar disorder is not curable although it can be treated to help the person with the illness gain control of his/her mood episodes. Many factors are considered first before the treatment and foremost of them is an accurate and complete diagnosis. A wrong diagnosis will result in mistreatment that could make the circumstances worse for the patient. Diagnosing Bipolar Disorder It is quite difficult even for a professional medical practitioner to make a diagnosis for bipolar disorder. One problem is that most people with the illness only seek help when they are in the depressive stage. When in manic or elevated mood they tend not to realize the problem and thus would not think of seeking any help.
The typical diagnostic exams given for bipolar disorder are psychological evaluation, medical history and physical exam. A psychological evaluation involves three key components that will determine the diagnosis: the symptoms, the trajectory or pattern of the illness, and family history. A complete medical history of the person is required by the doctor in order to rule out other factors that do not necessarily contribute to the disorder.
Physical exam includes blood tests, Thyroid profile, EEG and CT and MRI scan of the brain. Classes of Bipolar Disorder Bipolar disorder I – This is the most severe type where the affected person experiences manic episodes and/or episodes of major depression.
Bipolar disorder II – The disorder is characterized by a hypomanic episode which is a lesser form of mania and also at least one major depressive episode. Those with this type of disorder are at most risk of committing suicide because their depressive episodes are more intense than the manic episodes. Cyclothymia – The individual who suffers from this illness had both episodes of both hypomania and mild depression or what is termed as dysthymic in medical language.
A bipolar disorder cannot be diagnosed as cyclothymia if there is a history of manic or major depression. The Treatment
The treatment for bipolar disorder is focused on effective long term management of the condition and restoring back to normal the person’s mood when he/she is experiencing an episode.
The most effective method of treating bipolar disorder is a combination of medication and therapy. Medication Mood stabilizers, notably lithium is commonly prescribed by the physician for all types of bipolar disorder before any other drug. It has been proven effective but not for all. Antidepressants are prescribed only when the person is in a depressed mood and should not be taken in a manic episode. The drug Prozac is an example of an antidepressant. Anticonvulsant drugs are administered orally for the control of seizures particularly on manic episodes. Valproic acid is one type of this medicine.
It is important to note that the drugs used for bipolar disorder medications have significant side effects including weight gain. Also, they should be taken with the prescription of a competent physician. Therapies
Medication alone is not effective if not combined with some form of therapy, and neither is therapy alone can be effective if not combined with medication. Here are some therapies for treating bipolar disorder:
Behavioral therapy- This therapy involves the psychiatrist or a trained specialist determining a patient’s negative behavior that causes stress and make his life miserable, and replacing the undesirable behavior with a positive one.
Cognitive therapy – While behavior therapy replaces negative behavior with positive ones, cognitive therapy identifies and modify thinking patterns associated with mood shifts. Interpersonal therapy – Aims to reduce the stress on the patient by focusing on his interactions with the important people in his life and solving whatever interpersonal problems that exist between them. Social Rhythm therapy – The gist of the therapy is to help the patient get back and manage his day to day activities such as sleep schedule, house work, exercise or doing shopping.

I have an assistant at my work named Einstein. He’s a yellow lab and he’s been coming to work with me for about twelve years now, since he was a puppy. Though he’s a great help with children and other clients that I see in private practice, helping them feel comfortable; he’s an ever greater asset to me. He’s very intelligent, kind, gentle, and incredibly sensitive to people’s feelings. The two of us go on a walk almost every day. We walk anywhere from a couple of miles to three or four miles; he’s very healthy, but now that he’s twelve years old he’s slowed down quite a bit. When he gets in the car I usually have to give him a little boost to get in. Before I sat down to do this pod cast, Einstein and I went for a walk. I’m in my office in Newport Beach today and behind my office there is a staircase that goes up to the cliffs where Einstein and I like to walk. I was walking ahead of Einstein and the leash that I was holding started tugging and Einstein wasn’t following me anymore. He had collapsed on the staircase and was looking up at me rather pitifully. Periodically his legs give way and they had collapsed underneath him as he was walking up the staircase. I, of course, turned around and went down, lifted him up and carried him up the rest of the staircase. We kept on walking, he started sniffing around and we both enjoyed the walk as we always do. As I was walking, I was thinking that what had happened made me realize something about us as humans. What many of us do when something tragic happens is create a story; a story that can run down a very dark path and ruin our day. For example, in this instance I could have thought: “Oh no, Einstein’s getting older, he’s not going to be able to walk some day. He may die some day soon. This is horrible. This is terrible. What am I going to do?” But I didn’t do that and neither did Einstein. Einstein just walked, he didn’t’ even think about what had happened. He went on and just did his typical sniffing, walking around, talking to other dogs and having a really good time; just as I did, although I didn’t sniff around quite as much as he did. What we didn’t do was create a story. Today, right now, Einstein was able to get up and keep walking. He’s healthy today. Tomorrow may be different, in a few weeks it may be worse; but right now he is doing fine and we are doing fine and we enjoy our walks together. When he reaches a point where he won’t be able to walk anymore, Einstein and I will both adjust to that. If there comes a time, and it will as it comes in all of our lives, where Einstein will head on over to the other side we will adjust to that too. Of course, if Einstein hadn’t gotten up and I needed to take him to the hospital I would have done that. I would have done what I had to do to make him well, keep him safe, and have him not suffer. But still, even in that, we would just live in the moment. This is how it relates to mediation.

If you’ve been reading my articles for a while you know that meditation, from my perspective, is about quieting the mind and living in the present moment basically one breath at a time. There are so many beautiful, wonderful things to be with and meditation teaches us to do just that. When we meditate we concentrate on our mantra, our prayer word, our breath and we don’t create stories in our head. We just follow our breath, be present with the moment, and enjoy the meditation experience. When we stop meditating, the goal is to keep this going by being present with what is and trying to keep our minds fairly clear and empty. It’s a very child-like approach to living. Just enjoying life one breath at a time, being present with what is, and not creating stories. Einstein is so good at doing this. He has something to teach all of us and we can learn from it.

Meditation is another way to learn how to live in the present moment and really enjoy life’s journey. Yes, there will be tragedy. Yes, there will be dark times, but they’re much, much darker when we create a story; a story of negativity, a story of what will happen, what might happen instead of just focusing on what is happening.

There’s a distinction in the medical community between pain and suffering. Pain is the physical sensation that occurs when we have something physically happen to us that causes us physiological pain. For example, in Einstein’s case when he was looking up at me from the stairs he probably was in a bit of pain because he had collapsed and fallen on all fours and couldn’t get up. It was probably a bit painful. The suffering would be the mental part; the mental part that we create… “Why did this happen? What’s wrong with me? Is this going to get worse? Oh no, oh no, oh no!” We do often do that, creating our own anguish. That is suffering. Suffering is mental and it makes pain far, far worse than just the pain in and of itself. I think that’s why meditation is so effective in treating pain because it eliminates the stories we create in our heads.

When Einstein’s in pain he doesn’t’ create a story in his head. When I first got him and he was a puppy, he had a very allergic reaction to something he ate in the backyard. We took him to the pet emergency center because his head had swollen to at least two to three times its normal size. Einstein always loves to meet new people; so even though his head was completely swollen, his tail was wagging away because he was so excited to meet all these new people at the veterinarian emergency center. Meditation teaches us to live in the present moment, not to create stories, and just be. It’s a beautiful way of life and I encourage all of us to try it. We will forget, of course, but if we keep going back to it and keep remembering “Oh, I don’t have to create a story. All I need to focus on is that there’s a problem, can I fix it?” Einstein was stuck on the stairs, I picked him up, and we went for a walk. That’s all it was. All of us have things happen in life. The one thing in life that is guaranteed is that life will change; but by not creating a story we adjust to change so much better. We respond instead of react, when we don’t create a story. Life can go pretty well when we don’t create a story and we just enjoy life one breath, one moment at a time. Meditation is our tool for teaching us how to do this.

Remember, after you stop meditating in the morning and in the evening keep your mind in that meditative state, that state of present awareness, of just being throughout the day. Of course we need to use our minds to make decisions and other things throughout the day but far, far, far less than we actually need to use it. What I believe we will find is that if we just quiet our mind, live in the zone by just being, life actually goes much, much better.

Let’s try to live like Einstein; not create stories out of tragedies and just get up and start walking again. I think we will find that this is a healthy way to live our lives

Taunton Deane councillors and officers are being invited to visit a secure hospital in Birmingham as an example of a proposed new development just outside Wellington.
The visit on Tuesday, May 31, is to a 128-bed facility providing a range of medium, enhanced low, locked, and low secure services similar to those suggested for the Wellington hospital.
It was built in the residential area of Stirchley, south Birmingham, by Montpelier Estates, which has submitted a planning application for a 72-bed hospital at Chelston.
The Birmingham hospital opened about two years ago and is run by mental healthcare charity St Andrew’s Healthcare.
Montpelier director James McGarry said: “Because there is no comparable healthcare facility locally, we feel it is important that councillors have an opportunity to see one at first hand.
“They will be able to see the Birmingham facility’s setting, with residential housing immediately across the road, and to talk with staff from the hospital and with local residents and ask any questions.
“I am sure councillors will find it an informative and eye-opening occasion and that they will learn a lot about the hospital’s impact on community cohesion and people’s quality of life, and how it affects other people’s perceptions of the area, as well as house prices, jobs, and local small businesses within the community.”
Meanwhile, it emerged this week that a powerful lobby of national mental health charities has joined criticism of house builder Persimmon Homes for its recent stigmatisation of people with mental illness.
Persimmon has threatened to withhold part of a £443,000 community facilities payment should the Chelston Hospital receive planning permission, because the company is planning a nearby housing estate.
Although the new hospital would pump £20 million into the local economy and provide 225 new jobs, Persimmon has complained that a hospital offering treatment and rehabilitation for people with mental illness and learning disabilities would increase Wellington people’s fears of crime, and consequently it would not pay all the money due.
Now, the heads of no fewer than four leading mental health charities have attacked the comments made by Persimmon.
They include:
• Time to Change, which is Britain’s largest anti-stigma programme and is led by a partnership of Mind and Rethink
• Turning Point, a specialist not only in mental health services but in a range of social care interventions to help people with complex needs, including those affected by drug and alcohol misuse, mental health problems, and learning disabilities
• Rethink, which was founded more than 30 years ago to help people affected by severe mental illness to recover a better quality of life
• The Centre for Mental Health, which focuses on criminal justice and employment with the aim of helping to create a society in which people with mental health problems enjoy equal chances in life to those without
Turning Point chief executive Lord Victor Adebowale said it was depressing that ‘a reputable company wanted to put cash before principles’.
Lord Adebowale said: “It seems to me that this is an attempt by ignorant people to cash in by reducing their requirement under Section 106 – something in my experience which is very common when dealing with private developers who get properties built and then use Section 106 to negotiate out by using arguments like this.
“Turning Point has many services in residential areas, some in very desirable residential areas, with no complaints whatsoever.
“Being a free country, Persimmon can say what they like. However, I think an apology from Persimmon would be appropriate but I doubt you will get one. Even naming on the floor of the House, would be unlikely to lead to the kind of people running Persimmon changing their views.
“One can only hope to ensure that Persimmon understand that their views will affect their desirability as a building partner with local authorities up and down the land and pursue in a way that affects their pockets.”
Time to Change director Sue Baker said: “Misinformation about mental health issues – in particular the perception of the risk people with mental health problems pose to others – fuels the stigma that still plagues such a commonly experienced health issue.
“We have undertaken a lot of partnership campaigning with the Somerset PCT, mental health trust, and local mental health charities in order to improve public attitudes across Somerset.
“We are currently discussing plans to do more activity this summer and comments like these only serve to unpick these efforts.”
Sue, who grew up in Taunton, said she could remember the powerful impact of the stigma attached to the Tone Vale Hospital when she was at school and college.
The Centre for Mental Health deputy chief executive Andy Bell said: “As a mental health charity with a particular interest in people’s life chances in the criminal justice system, this is a matter of some concern.
“We are aware that negative local media campaigns about mental health facilities not only damage the planning of new services but contribute to overall experiences of stigma and discrimination.
“We would certainly support calls for the company to think again about the way they speak publicly about people with mental health problems.”
Jane Harris, campaigns manager of Rethink, said: “We agree that the hospital should not be seen as increasing fear of crime and are concerned by these comments.”
Montpelier Estates is working closely with Wellington Chamber of Commerce to ensure as many jobs and business services contracts as possible go to local people.
The firm has launched a pre-registration process on its dedicated website http://www.thenewchelstonhospital.co.uk for prospective suppliers and employees.
Priory Group, the proposed operator of the Chelston Hospital, already operates more than 50 hospitals, schools, and care homes nationwide.
Montpelier Estates has provided more than 500 specialist beds in the past nine years, working with the NHS, charities, and independent providers.
Because of the lack of facilities in the South West, there are currently about 100 people with mental illness or learning difficulties who have to be treated outside the region, meaning families often have to travel and stay away in order to visit them.

“Living with Schizophrenia: A Call for Hope and Recovery” is a half-hour documentary film that tells the story of three people who are living meaningful lives with schizophrenia, a chronic and potentially disabling brain disorder. The film sets out to increase understanding and to reduce the fear and stigma often associated with this mental health condition. About one percent of the US adult population, or 2 million, and approximately 24 million people globally are living with schizophrenia.

“‘Living with Schizophrenia’ highlights the stories that don’t make the headlines – the stories of hope and promise,” said Emily Abt, award-winning filmmaker and director of the film. “My grandmother struggled with schizophrenia, and making this documentary gave me new insights about what it is like to have this illness and overcome the obstacles in life that it presents.”

In the film, viewers journey with three individuals with schizophrenia to experience their daily struggles, personal insights, paths to the mental health recovery process, and the impact their illness has had on those who love them. “Living with Schizophrenia” delves into the lives of Ashley, who after finding effective treatment for her schizophrenia, returned to school and created a blog to share her story with others; Joshua, who was in and out of psychiatric hospitals for six years and now, following his path of mental health recovery, is dedicated to helping others living with the illness; and Rebecca, who spent a decade blaming herself for her diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia and is now actively involved in her treatment process.

Ashley, Joshua, and Rebecca are joined in the film by their families and experts in schizophrenia, including community-based psychiatrist Rebecca Roma, MD, medical director of the Community Treatment Team at Mercy Behavioral Health in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Xavier Amador, PhD, clinical psychologist and founder and director of the LEAP Institute; and, Dave, president of the Georgia chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). Throughout the film, they share their perspectives and reinforce the message of hope and self-acceptance for people living with schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a complex mental disorder whose cause eludes experts to this day. Researchers have identified various risk factors for schizophrenia, including heredity, brain damage, and environmental factors such as social stress, isolation, and drug use. The disease typically manifests as abnormal psychological functioning and disturbed behavior. There are currently no physical or lab tests that diagnose the disease; therefore, schizophrenia is diagnosed by the presence of symptom types.

“By sharing the powerful stories of Ashley, Joshua, and Rebecca, we can work to reduce the fear and reduce the stigma, just like we’ve done with so many other issues over the years,” said Dr. Roma. “Deep down inside, we’re all people with different struggles and I learn from my patients every day about the power of perseverance and hope.”

“Living with Schizophrenia” was funded and produced by Janssen, Division of Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. The people featured in the film present their own stories and ideas and were not compensated by Janssen to appear in the film. Janssen products are not named or promoted in the film.

SizeGenetics has been too popular when thousands of men gained bigger and stronger penis size in the last few years. Size Genetics is one of the truly male enlargement extenders that really work for men. As you know that some men were given good size when they were born while others were not. Fortunately, in this modern science, you can change it. You can change from a small penis to a bigger one using the most popular device, SizeGenetics. It is the solution for those who are suffering about their tiny size which made them too embarrassed at the male gyms and in public. Especially, when these men are in front of their woman, they don’t have confidence to show off their little boy.

The self confidence is based on the masculinity of the penis size. A man with big and long penis usually has more macho than a man who has tiny or small penis. The size is based on two things, the length and girth. Most women prefer both the width and length to help them sexually satisfied. Based on this logic, there are male enlargement products that have been designed to help men extend the length and enlarge the girth of the penis. One of the top devices on the market today is SizeGenetics. It works as a traction device that helps your penile tissues grow, naturally. Men can wear this device during the day, even when they are in office. The way it works is to apply pressure to grow your penis tissues gradually. It also helps men who have crooked erections as well.

Thousands of men on this world are quietly suffering about the small, crooked, and short penises which result in poor sexual performance in bed. Size Genetics device was designed to help men gain extra inches and enhance their erection quality. It is recommended you wear it with loosely fitted clothes. As you know that most women prefer men who have bigger and longer penis which help them reach an orgasm or multiple orgasms. The average size is 6′5 when erect and most men have this size. Why don’t you stand out from the crowd and get a 9-inch penis? It is doable with SizeGenetics extender. However, most ladies are not comfortable with a penis bigger than 9 inches so you should stop wearing the Size Genetics system once you reached to this point. The SizeGenetics results are permanent so your effect won’t change.

Size Genetics is the quality penis stretcher and traction device that has been develped by a British company. This is the real deal to help you get larger and longer size without expensive and risky surgery. The way that Size Genetics really works is to apply the traditional orthopaedics method to force to assists the body’s natural ability to change and develop. From this traction force, the penis cells begin to divide and multiply thus increase the penile tissue mass.

When you have bigger and longer size, it allows more blood flow in it so you can get hard and stay hard. Remember, the SizeGenetics device is a doctor-approved and clinically tested medical extender that deliver the best results without side effects.

Are you suffering from premature ejaculation? If so, know that you are not alone being afflicted by this sexual problem. Millions of American men and many more around the world sadly are not lasting as long as they wish during sex. Truth be told, almost every men will experience premature ejaculation at least occasionally. If you need some honest tips and advice to effectively and naturally control PE, then you would want to read this article.

First of all, it would be extremely helpful to understand what exactly is premature ejaculation. This is super important because many men have different notions of what really constitute PE.

The truth about premature ejaculation

In short, PE is commonly defined as the inability of a man to delay ejaculation during sex till a point where both sex partners find it desirable. For most women, this is the point where they reach an orgasm. But as a great majority of women take three to four times longer than man to climax during lovemaking, it is not difficult to understand why most sexual relationships fall short of expectations.

Effects of premature ejaculation

I probably need not stress how PE can impact on your life. You probably already know about it by now. Different guys will be affected by PE in varying degrees. But we all know that an unfulfilling sex life can exert tremendous strain on a sexual relationship. You see, PE can adversely affect your self confidence and perception of self-worth. Many men have this deep-seated fear of not performing up to mark, and this ironically further causes them to climax quickly, sometimes even within seconds of sexual penetration. Perhaps an even deeper fear is that the female partner may seek sexual gratification elsewhere.

Options to keep premature ejaculation at bay

There exists a whole range of products – from desensitizing creams and pills to penis rings that claim to help prevent early ejaculation. Most of these serve their purpose and can be useful, but many have their downsides too, most notably relating to the dulling of sensation during sex.

Other the other hand, natural training and conditioning programs that incorporate exercises specifically tailored to help men overcome rapid ejaculation is probably among the best solutions. These programs and exercises are extremely safe to do, either on your own or with a female partner. They are not an immediate solution, but these will provide a permanent cure and help you last much longer during sex.

Lloyd Lester is the creator of “Ejaculation By Command”, a complete, step-by-step blueprint to help men permanently end premature ejaculation and last longer in bed.
The magic of happiness:
Happiness seems to have magical powers. Though not proven scientifically, but happiness can result to longer life, better health, resiliency and good performance among people. According to Professor Ed Diener, University of Illinois, in The Science of Happiness, there is evidence that happy people live longer, nine years on the average, than depressed and unhappy people.

The problem is that happiness cannot be measured. Health and fitness can be generally measured by the BMI (body mass index) and other medical indicators like blood pressure, cholesterol, uric acid, sugar levels, etc. On the other hand, social scientists wanting to measure the degree of happiness among people can only rely on the simple question, “how happy are you?”

The answers they get, of course, vary between different people but they consider these as valid, though not perfect. Another researcher, Professor Daniels Kahneman determined that……”once a person has a home, food and clothes, extra money does not seem to make him much happier.”

What makes man happy?
This question was posed in a Happiness and Fitness forum and the reactions given are a study for social scientists to look into. Of the thirty or so who responded, the following make them happy (arranged in the order of their importance):

First:
- Sex;
Second:
- Woman they love, respect and get along with;
Third:
- Beer;
- Love and Respect;
Fourth:
- Feelings of machismo;
- Sports
- Food
Fifth:
- Space and time for himself;
- Personal achievement
- Good health
Sixth:
- Money;
- Good friends,
- Video games,
- Laughing at their stupid mistakes,
- A comfortable home
- God.

The forum did not indicate the cross-sectional backgrounds of those who answered the question and their number cannot, by any means, be considered the general perception of what makes man happy. But it does make an interesting revelation. For one, it is difficult to argue about sex being a determinant of what can make man happy. And the other is that, basically, what makes man happy are those that satisfy his feelings, his senses, not the material things around him.

It is worrisome, though, that God is no more important than video games, as a one of those things that make man happy.

Passing shot:
The same study indicates that nothing can make a grouch giggle all of the time.

I recently read a book, The Secret. Well, what is in there is not really a secret but considered so because after all these years, man has missed the very essential truth in happy living. Well, read the book to find out. It is really worth the time.
