There’s been a huge surge in recent years of prescriptions being written for statins in order to bring down levels of LDL, the so-called “bad cholesterol”. Doctors also will often urge you to cut down on red meat, eggs, bacon, and other things that many of us get so much joy out of eating. However, a recent research project found that adding certain foods to your diet (such as soy protein, sticky fiber (those found in oats and barley), plant sterols and nuts) is actually more effective at reducing bad cholesterol than eating a diet low in saturated fat. Participants were asked to eat a handful of nuts such as almonds or walnuts every day, and to substitute milk and meats with soy and tofu products as often as possible. The authors of the report say that the previously mentioned change in diet can actually reduce LDL by half of the levels which can be obtained by using statins like Crestor, Lipitor or Zocor. It could reduce the risk of a fatal heart attack or stroke by 20%. Nearly one in six Americans have high cholesterol, so this will be welcome news to them. More than 355 million prescriptions were dispensed last year for lipid-regulating drugs, making them the most commonly prescribed medication, according to IMS Health. It will be interesting to see how many follow up research projects are done. Drug companies surely won’t like the results of this research project given the billions of dollars which are spent each year on statins. At Family inHome Caregiving we emphasize having a good diet, exercise and plenty of social stimulation in order to keep the young at heart feeling young. This research project shows that we can still find a balance which includes a bit of bacon once in awhile.
About Richard Kuehn & Family inHome Caregiving of Monterey:
After more than a decade of caregiving, both in a professional environment and for a 97 year old family member I was dissatisfied with service from local caregiving agencies. I became convinced of the need for a service which provides very personal assistance to elderly and founded Family inHome Caregiving serving the Monterey Peninsula.
